When Netflix aired Plastic Detox in March 2026, it made headlines.
The message that plastics was no longer just an environmental issue but a threat to the human survival sent shockwaves globally.
It was shocking to learn that human fertility has gone down 50% in the last 50 years and hormone disruptors in plastics were largely to blame.
Personally, I was stunned by the documentary.
Now there was a reason to explain the unexplained infertility I experienced over 20 years ago.
I tried for a baby for 8 years without getting pregnant once.
Then I turned to IVF. It took 2 years for me to become pregnant. I was over the moon, and despite my worries during pregnancy, I gave birth to a healthy baby girl.
But it took a toll on my health. The countless tests, laparoscopic exams, and oestrogen injections destroyed me.
For about 5 years, I suffered from severe eczema (for the first time in my life) and I developed new food allergies to more and more kinds of food (wheat, grains, coffee, meat etc).
I became a shadow of myself. My skin became sallow. I was lethargic all the time. I lost so much weight that my clothes didn't fit.
It wasn't until I sought out Chinese traditional medicine that I became to heal. It took me another 5 years before I regained my health.
Now, 20 years later, it all finally made sense.
My body which, probably, had been full of endocrine (hormone) disruptors (bisphenols A & phthalates) couldn't become pregnant. Then I made the situation worse by injecting oestrogen and other drugs into my body in order to become pregnant. No wonder my body collapsed!
While I have regained my "health", the IVF had irreparable consequences. It brought on early menopause (in my mid 40s) and the side effects that came with it.
The irony is that I started going plastic free after I gave birth and not before.
I wish I knew then what I know now.
The Plastic Detox is 20 years too late for me.
But it's not too late for you.
Take the first step today.
Reduce your plastics to improve your fertility.
